Hol volt, hol nem volt egyszer egy életvidám, fiatal olasz lány, aki 1992-ben egy szerencsétlen januári hajnalon autóbalesetet szenvedett. A a leccoi kórházban sikerül megmenteni az életét, de az eszméletét nem nyerte vissza.
Két év küzdés után az orvosok hivatalosan is kijelentik, nincs remény, hogy a vegetatív állapotból valaha vissza lehesen hozni. Mesterségesn, szondán keresztül táplálják és biztosítják a hidratálását.
1999-ben az apa kezdeményezi, hogy szüntessék be Eluana mesterségesen történő életben tartását. A leccoi bíróság azonban elutasítja a kérvényt.
Ettől kezdve az apa kétségbeesett, folyamatos harcot folytat, hogy meghallgattassék. Még az akkori miniszterelnök, Ciampihoz segítségét is kéri. De csak elutasító döntések születnek, miközben Eluana állapota semmit nem változik.
A kérvényt évek múltán felújítják, de a Fellebbviteli Bíróság 2003-ban és 2006-ban újra és újra elutasítja. Az újságok és egyéb médiák folyamatosan számolnak be az apa újabb próbálkozásairól, és állandó beszédtéma lesz. Eluana esete nagy vihart kavar és az ország két részre szakad: azokra, akik szerint Eluana-t hagyni kell békében meghalni, és azokra akik szerint az életet minden áron védeni kell.
2007-ben a Legfelsőbb Bíróság véleményezése szerint a megszakítást akkor lehet engedélyezni, ha a következő két körülmény egyidejűleg fennáll: a vegetatív állapot bizonyítottan visszafordíthatatlan és a beteg nem adta egyértelmű beleegyezését az életfunkciók mesterséges fenntartásához.
Ennek hatására a milánói fellebbviteli bíróság újraviszgálja az ügyet és 2008. júliusában engedélyezi a mesterséges táplálás felfüggesztését. Még mielőtt azonban az apa fellélegezhetne, a Parlament konfliktust vél felfedezni a véleményezés és a döntés között, így az ügy az Alkotmánybíróságra kerül.
A család Lombardia régiót kéri, hogy jelölje ki azt az intézményt, ahol – a Fellebbviteli Bíróság döntése alapján – végrehajtják a mesterséges életbentartás felfüggesztését, de a lombardiai vezetőség nem hajlandó erre.
Októberre végül megérkezik az Alkotmánybíróság véleményezése, amiben helybenhagyják a Fellebbviteli Bíróság ítéletét.
Ez alkalommal azonban maga Eluana “szól közbe”, állapota súlyosan romlik és már úgy tűnik, magától készül távozni az élők sorából, így elhalasztják a végrehajtást.
Decemberre azonban a Jóléti Miniszter kibocsát egy rendelkezést, miszerint “bármely fogyatékos ember számára garantálni kell a mesterséges táplálást és hidratációt”, s illegálissá nyilvánítja annak felfüggesztését bármely nemzeti egészségügyi intézményben. Ezzel a lépéssel gyakorlatilag lehetetlenné téve, hogy az ítéletet végre lehessen hajtani.
Az emberi jogok európai bírósága azonban ellenzi ezt a rendeletet és támogatja a döntést Eluana mesterséges táplálásának megszüntetéséről.
A Jóléti Minszter nem hagyja annyiban a dolgot, és 2009. januárban eljárást kezdeményez az udinei kórház ellen, amely befogadta volna Eluana-t utolsó napjaira.
Végül Eluana-t egy udinei szeretotthonba kerül, amelyik vállalja a segédkezést. Itt saját szobát kap és február 6-án leállítják mesterséges táplálását.
Közben a Miniszterekelnök egy rendeletet indítványoz annak érdekében, folytassák a nő életben tartását. Ám a kötársasági elnök nem írja alá az indítványt. A vezér továbbra sem adja fel és törvényjavaslatot terjeszt be a parlament elé.
Kezdődik a versenyfutás az idővel. Eluana-t továbbra sem táplálják, de a törvényjavaslat mielőbbi szavazásra vár. S közben a Jóléti Miniszter szakembereket küld a szeretotthonba, akik adminisztratív szabálytalanságokat találnak abban, ahogy Eluana szobája használatba került. Ennek nyomán az udinei ügyész kivizsgálást kezd.
Február 9-én eldől, a törvényjavaslatot másnap bocsájtják szavazásra.
A versenyfutást azonban végül Eluana nyeri és este 8 óra 10 perckor, 17 év és 22 napnyi kóma után távozik az élők sorából.
