Az olaszok általában véve nem bíznak az olyan fizetési módokban, ami nem vezet számukra azonnali kézzelfogható eredményre. Tehát legjobb, ha mindig van nálunk készpénz. Magyarországgal ellentétben itt senki sem panaszkodik, ha 50 euróssal fizetünk egy 4 eurós tétel esetén. Visszaadnak amennyit kell, és kész.
Nyugat-európai viszonlyatban kevés helyen lehet kártyával fizetni. A kártyás fizetőhelyek nem korlátozódnak bizonyos típusú üzletekre, leginkább attól függ, hogy a tulaj éppen hogyan vélekedik. Így például bárokban és trafikokban is előfordul, viszont esetleg pont ott nem tudunk bankkártyával fizetni, ahol azt elvárnánk (pl. cipőüzletben vagy a biztosító irodában, ahol épp az éves autóbiztosítási díjat készülünk befizetni).
Kártyás fizetésnél készüljünk fel a következő kérdésre: „Carta o bancomat?” 
vagyis „Hitel- vagy folyószámlakártya?”. Itt ugyanis többnyire ugyanazt műanyag kártyát lehet mindkét célra használni. Ha folyószámlakártya funkciót alkalmazzuk, akkor PIN kódot kérnek, ha a hitelkártya funkciót akkor csak egy aláírást. Előfordulhat, hogy hitelkártya használatkor kérnek személyazonosító igazolványt (többnyire nem).
A taxi elsősorban készpénzes móka. Kártyás fizetés kizárólag akkor, ha a taxi rendelésnél ezt előre jelezzük és közöljük a kártya típusát is. Ha az utcán leintünk egy taxist, az esetek 90%-ban akkor sem fog bankkártyás fizetést elfogadni, ha egyébként technikailag fel van készülve rá. Amex kártyatulajdonosok nagy hátránnyal indulnak, ugyanis azt kifejezetten nem szeretik. (Bosszantó, amikor a tájékozatlan külföldi a reptéren 20 percet áll sorba a taxihoz, majd szembesülnie kell a rideg valósággal, hogy kártyával egyik taxinál sem lehet fizetni.) Ha taxiban végül mégis sikerül kártyával fizetnünk, akkor két módszer használatos: manuális, amikor a dombornyomott kártyáról papírrásolatot csinálnak, a másik pedig a bankkártya terminál (ami nem mindig működik végül sajnos). Egy apró reménysugár e területen, amit eddig egyeten taxisnál láttam: Amex kártyával való fizetés mobiltelefonon keresztül.
Nagy összegű fizetésnél (pl. autóvásárlás) készpénz vagy csekk az általános. Átutalásra is rá lehet egyeseket beszélni, de nagyon nem szeretik.
Az Interneten vásárlás és fizetés szintén nem túl népszerű az olaszoknál. Nem bíznak benne. Azért már kezd terjedni az internetes oldalakon ez a lehetőség, de a technikai megoldás általában nagyon komplikált és kezdetleges (pl ha valamit véletlenül elírunk, akkor kezdhetjük az egészet előről)
Autópálya díjat készpénzzel, kártyával vagy Telepass-szal lehet leróni. Jellemző, hogy amíg a készpénzes fizetőkapunál hosszú sor kígyózik, addig a kártyás fizetőkaput alig veszi igénybe valaki. A leggyorsabb megoldás a Telepass, de ehhez külön szerződés és jeladó szükséges.
Közüzemi díjak fizetése a várostól függ. Csekkes és központi díjbeszedés mindenhol működik, de amíg Milánóban akár online is követhetjük és fizethetjük a gázt és elektromosságot, addig Rómában bizony havonta járhatunk a postára.
Csekkbefizetés és átutalás díja nem olcsó, tételenként 1,5 – 2,5 euró között mozog.

@CsillaM: szerintem maguk az olaszok sem tudják, hogy miért nem használnak telepass-t. A közlekedést megkönnyíti, ha többen használnák, kevesebb dugó lenne. Szerintem egyszerűen a népszerűsítése hiányzik…
Sokszor történik meg az is, hogy ahol általában elfogadnak kártyát, hetekig nem lehet fizetni bancomattal, mondván hogy nem működik a készülék. Az is bosszantó tud lenne, bár be szokták mondani a hangosba.
igen, es nekem az volt furcsa, hogy itt van plusz csekkbefizetesi koltseg. magyarhonban ugye az 5000 ftos csekknel 5000t fizecc a postan. itt meg 50 eurosnal pl 51-2 eurot…
lehet csak szerencses helyekre jarunk, de eddig szinte min denutt tudtunk kartyaval fizetni. etteremben, cipoboltban, ruhazatiban, stb.

A közüzemi díjak online fizetésére eleinte még működött a magyar Mastercard, de már jó ideje nem. A mediashoppingra se. A bankom ügyintézője mondta, hogy odáig el se jutott a kártyaazonosítás, létezik olyan, hogy a netes fizetést intéző bank diszkriminál egy országot, vagy általában a külföldi kártyákat. Úgyhogy marad a postaköltség és a vele járó közüzemi letét :(
