Ez az a sarki hely, ahol az emberek menet közben bedobnak egy kávét, reggelente péksüteményt és napközben illetve este munkából hazamenet bekapnak egy szendvicset A reggelit és a kávét itt általában a pultnál állva fogyazstják.
Az olasz bárok a legkedveltebb találkozóhelyek. Mindig nyüzsög bennük az élet.
Milánóban szinte minden bárban este 7 és 9 között “dúl” az aperitivo.
- Trattoria (trattoría) – Időnként nagyon nehéz megmondani, hogy mi is a különbség a ristorante és a trattoria között. Talán úgy lehet őket megkülönböztetni, hogy a trattoria többnyire nem legfrekventáltabb helyeken, hanem mellékutcákban lelhető fel és a szolgáltatás kevésbé formális. Általában családi vállalkozás, amelyben nagy valószínűséggel a család öregje főzi számunkra a menün
található ételeket. A trattoria általában négyzetméterre is kisebb, mint az éttermek.
- Osteria (osztería) – Ha úgy gondolsz a trattoriára, mint ami egy szinttel az étterem nívója alatt van, akkor az osteria még egy lépés lefelé a trattoriától. De ez egyáltalán nem a minőségi szinteket jelenti, hanem a formális kiszolgálás, szolgáltatás fokát. Az osteria az a hely, ahol a helyiek gyűlnek össze egy-egy étkezésre és sokkal kevésbé turisták által látogatott. Minden megvan benne, ami egy bárban, kiegészítve étteremi szolgáltatással.
A menü általában igen rövid és naponta, kétnaponta változik. Ha igazi, házias olasz ételt szeretnénk, akkor leginkább a trattoriába vagy osteriaba érdemes menni.
- Taverna (taverna) – egy aprócska étkezőhely, és általában rusztikus berendezés jellemzi. Talán kissé több hangsúlyt fektet a bárjának kínálatára, mint az étterem vagy trattoria, így nem véletlen, hogy az emberek gyakran inkább inni jönnek ide, mint enni. Úgy lehet elképzelni, mint egy bár, csak éppen ide nem reggelizni jönnek az emberek, hanem vacsorázni. A menüben olcsó árkategóriájú ételekből választhatunk.

A “gyorsétterem” jelleg ne tévesszen meg senkit, itt nem hamburgert adnak, a válaszaték pedig elég széles lehet: rántott hústól, a grillezett zöldségeken keresztül a lasagnáig. Az ételek általában frissek, nem kell aggódni hogy pár napos csirekmellet sóznak ránk, különösen, ha sokak által látogatott helyről van szó.
- Pizzeria (piccería) – Valószínűleg mindenki tudja, miről van szó. Annyit érdemes talán elmondani, hogy itt nemcsak pizzát lehet fogyasztani, hanem egyéb ételeket is. Általában véve igaz, hogy az “-eria”-ra végződő helyeken érdemes azt enni, amit a neve ajánl: pizzeriában pizzát, gelateriaban pedig gelatot (fagylaltot). Egyéb “-eria” étkezőhelyek lehetnek még például a bruschetteria vagy a spaghetteria.
- Rosticceria (roszticcsería) – Az előzőekben írtak alapján kitalálható, hogy ez is egy “-eria” hely, ahol “rost-” vagyis sült dolgokat árulnak. Általában széles választékot kínálnak és a tavola calda-hoz hasonlóan, itt is előre elkészítik az ételeket. Tipikusan az a hely, ahova a dolgozó ember beugrik hazafele menet egy kis rendes kajáért, amikor nincs kedve főzni. Ebédidőben kisebb adagokat lehet vásárolni, amit felmelgítenek és helyben el lehet fogyasztani.
