Még tavasszal ajánlgatták olasz ismerősök az Eragon című
könyvet Christopher Paolinitől. Otthon még nem lehetett semmi hallani
róla, így angolul szereztük be a Nyugati környékén az első részt.
A könyvet pár nap alatt olvastuk ki mind a ketten, a történet elvarázsol, magával ragad és messzire repít. A sztori nagyjából arról szól, hogy egy kis faluban élő fiatal fiú hogyan talál (nem is annyira véletlenül) egy sárkánytojást, hogyan kezd el ismerkedni a bébisárkánnyal, majd kerül egyre inkább az események körforgásának közepébe. Kiderül, hogy egy történelmi örökség részévé vált azzal, hogy számára bújt elő a sárkány és számtalan új támogatót, de ellenséget is talál az utazása alatt, ahogy a falutól egyre messzebre sodorják a fordulatok.
Hihetetlen, hogy mennyire jól fel van építve a könyv – lévén Harry Potter rajongó – engem eléggé emlékeztet HP helyzetére, a képességek felismerésének menetére, majd a régi történetek előkerülésére. Hasonlóan harcol Eragon is az ellen, hogy belecsöppent egy szerepbe, eleinte inkább csak sodródik az eseményekkel és az első könyv végére is csak ösztönösen érzi, hogy mit kell tennie. (Láttam, hogy van előzetese a megjelenő filmnek, öntudatosabbnak tűnik ott, mint ahogy a könyvben meg van írva.) A mesevilág viszont erőteljesen Gyűrük Ura érzetű, beleértve a térképeket, a kiejtés-szótárat és a Tolkienre hajazó nyelvteremtési kísérleteket.
Lelőni nem szeretném a részleteket, talán majd egy külön bejegyzésben – mindenesetre csak a második könyv (angolul Eldest) elolvasása után derült ki, hogy Paolini 15 évesen kezdte el írni az Eragont és 19 évesen kezdték el promóciózni. A második könyvet 21 évesen fejezte be, a trilógia harmadik részét jövőre fejezi be. Ezek után még nagyobb tisztelettel és rácsodálkozással szemléltük a könyveket – a harmadik rész pont jó lesz arra, hogy kihúzzuk vele az utolsó Harry Potterig ;)

Folks, my blog is not about Slumdog Millionaire in particular but the obsession of Danny to show selectively dirty holes of our country. Or else he would not have selected the short film Manjha. I have nothing against exposing poverty or ones own reality since my upbringing has been through the films of Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray, Lankesh, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal among others. But when a film maker from outside India repeatedly chooses to show our poverty before the world, my Indian sentiments are hurt. Certainly I love India more than Danny Boyle does. I loved Manjha and had, on an earlier occasion, profusely thanked Anil for making such a powerful expose. In fact I never questioned Slumdog before this day. When I saw Danny picking once again the crude reality of our slums, I felt he was not being just. Now if that’s how he wants to go, fine .. its his privileges. But I have mine too. Similarly you all to have the right to miss my points too. I dont mind. Because I respect the feelings of all of you who bothered to read and then pass your judgements. Jai Ho!

When the lady who is a receptionist in my office asked me the day after SM got 8 oscars, so is India really like that, I told her with all my patience that no India is much more than slums and kids jumping into crap. No matter how much she nodded her head in agreement with me, I knew it by the way she looked at me that she had already made up her mind. Thats what I hate yaa. Its easy to sit in India and say SM is a great movie, its tough when you have to face the westerners on their turf and they dont take you seriously at first cos our skin color is diffirent. There is prejudice make no mistake and it takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work from Indians and people from the Sub Continent to change that.
