Eltelve szomorúsággal Pico eltekert a nagy mezőkig. Megfeledkezve az irányról egyre messzebb került a nyájtól. Eljött az este, és a nyáj szokás szerint a tűz körül üldögél, rémtörténeteket hallgatva, gondolta Pico. "Vajon ki veszi észre közülük a hiányomat?" – gondolta Pico, miközben tovább tekert. "Vajon ki indul a keresésemre?"
Szeretett volna visszafordulni, de már nem emlékezett az idevezető útra. Ahogy egyre sötétedett, még mindig nem tudta merre menjen. A sötétben figyelni kezdte az őt körülvevő fákat – ha most a nyájjal lenne, most körülülnék a tüzet. A fáknak, alig láthatóan a sötétben, határozottan a kisbárány húsára fájt a foguk…
